Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era
The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China approved an amendment to the Party Constitution which enshrines Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.
The resolution hailed the new thought as "an important component of the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and a guide to action for the entire Party and all the Chinese people to strive for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."
The Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era builds on and further enriches Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Theory of Three Represents, and the Scientific Outlook on Development.
It is the latest achievement in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context, a crystallization of the practical experience and collective wisdom of the Party and the people.
Under the guidance of Xi's thought, "the CPC has led the Chinese people of all ethnic groups in a concerted effort to carry out a great struggle, develop a great project, advance a great cause, and realize a great dream, ushering in a new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics," it read.

Lu Guanqiu died
A famous Chinese entrepreneur, founder and board chairman of China's largest auto parts company Wanxiang Group, Lu Guanqiu, died Wednesday at the age of 72.
Lu was the first group of private entrepreneurs emerged after reform and opening-up.
In July, 1969, Lu and other six farmers, with 4,000 yuan (about 600 U.S. dollars), established an agricultural machinery plant. The plant now has become a transnational corporation with operational revenue over one hundred billion yuan and businesses covering manufacturing, energy, finance, agriculture and resources.
Lu's Wanxiang Group made many firsts among China's private enterprises. In 1984, Wanxiang became the first Chinese township company to sell automobile parts to the American market. In 1994, "Wanxiang Qianchao" went public in Shenzhen, becoming the first public listed township company in China. In 2001, Wanxiang purchased Universal Automotive Industries Inc, becoming the first Chinese township company to purchase an overseas listed company.
Lu Guanqiu was the pathfinder for China's private economy, said Yang Yiqing, a researcher on businessmen in Zhejiang.

sign language interpreter for 19th CPC National Congress
A video of a sign language interpreter's 3.5-hour live translation at the opening of the 19th CPC National Congress has gone viral. Zhou Ye, dressed in bright red, made over 25,000 signs with her hands, while CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered a report on October 18, 2017.
It is China's longest live sign interpretation broadcast, and Zhou received the printed document of Xi's report just 40 minutes ahead of the speech. Zhou said that by the time she had finished the translation, she was so exhausted that she could barely stand up.
The 54-year-old has been dubbed the "silent anchor" by Chinese, in praise of her efforts to help people with hearing disabilities to "hear" the big event. She is one of the most recognized faces in the Chinese sign language field. She has been working for a news program with China Central Television (CCTV) for years.
The experienced interpreter, currently headmaster of a special education school in Beijing, has more than 34 years of sign language teaching experience under her belt. "The government allowed the deaf and hearing-impaired to 'hear' the report at the first time. It is not only about the report itself, but also conveys a sense of respect, which is of greater significance," said Zhou.

Fast food giant McDonald's China has confirmed that it has changed its company name to Jingongmen, or Golden Arches.
A source with McDonald's confirmed that the company was officially renamed on October 12, citing "business development" as the reason. The name Golden Arches is derived from the shape of the McDonald's logo. It was stated that despite the altered company name, the name of its chain restaurants will not be changed and its daily business would not be affected.
Earlier this year, China International Trust and Investment Corporation Ltd (CITIC Ltd), CITIC Capital Holdings Ltd, and Carlyle Group arrived at an agreement to establish a new company, which became McDonald's largest-scaled franchised dealer overseas.
The change of McDonald's company name is being hailed as an asset restructuring, but it won't impact its brand, an industry insider explained.

“cooling off” period for divorcing couples
Couples will be forced to undergo a compulsory three month "cooling off" period before being allowed to divorce, according to rules introduced by a district court in east China's Shandong Province.
The People's Court of Shizhong District in Jinan, the provincial capital, has demanded starting Tuesday, all divorcing couples take three months to become "calm" and "reasonable." No one shall object to observing the mandate "without just cause." In the last week of the three-month period, the couple can ask the court to end or extend the period, according to the newly introduced court rules.
The measure was introduced because "judges frequently found that couples seeking divorce were not in a situation of irretrievable marriage breakdown," according to Men Hongke, deputy head of the district court. The court is trying to make a distinction between "marriage in crisis" and "marriage in ruins," he said.
Men said that many couples file for divorce on impulse or due to excessive intervention by their parents. If these cases move directly to legal proceedings, a marriage in crisis could be placed on a fast track towards divorce, he added.

A tram powered by hydrogen fuel cells was put into commercial operation Thursday in Tangshan, north China's Hebei Province. It is the first commercial hydrogen-powered tram in the world and made by China Railway Rolling Corporation (CRRC) Tangshan Co., Ltd.
With water being its only emission, the tram emits no pollutants. No nitrogen oxides will be produced as the temperature of the reaction inside hydrogen fuel cells is controlled under 100 degrees Celsius.
The distance between carriage floor of the tram and the rail is only 35 centimeters thanks to the latest low-floor technology, which can remove station platforms and thus making boarding easy for passengers.
It can be refilled with hydrogen in 15 minutes and can run for 40 km at a maximum speed of 70 km per hour. The tram operates on a 136-year-old railway in Tangshan City, one of China's earliest industrial cities, and links several of its industrial heritage sites.

Hutong Yangtze River Bridge
The main arches of Tiansheng port's special channel bridge of Hutong Yangtze River Bridge was connected on October 22, a breakthrough in the construction of the bridge linking Shanghai and Nantong City in Jiangxi Province.
The bridge, constructed by CCCC Second Harbour Engineering Co, is the world's longest rail-road steel arch bridge.
The channel bridge's span, on the north side of the Hutong Yangtze River Bridge, is 336 meters long and weighs 32,400 tons. The main bridge body of this section will be built this year.
Construction on the 11,072-meter-long Hutong Yangtze River Bridge started in March 2014. The bridge has a design that allows dual-use, with rails on the lower layer and a highway on the top.
"The bridge will become the third access way to cross the Yangtze River. The travel time from Shanghai to Nantong will be reduced to about one hour," said an official from the construction side.

Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART)
The world's first railless train, part of the intelligent rail express system, called Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART), hit the road on Monday in Zhuzhou, central China's Hunan Province, and autonomous driving of the train will be possible by 2020.
It has been independently developed by the CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co. By combining the advantages of modern tramcars and buses, the new product provides a new travel option and helps ease transport pressure in cities.
It is equipped with sensors that can detect the virtual tracks and respond to instructions sent by the central control unit, said Feng Jianghua, chief engineer of the institute.
The train may consist of three to five carriages depending on actual transport needs and hold 300 to 500 passengers, and can run at a speed of up to 70 kilometers per hour. It is powered by electricity, and a 10-minute charge enables it to run 25 kilometers.
As the train doesn't rely on steel rails, a transit line can be built in a year and put into use soon afterwards, while construction costs are also significantly lower compared to traditional trams.
